What is FirstSchool?

Objective - The First Presbyterian Church FirstSchool was founded in 1978 as a ministry of the church to provide a unique learning experience for children of our church community. Our overall goal is to minister to the needs of each child in a nurturing Christian learning environment which promotes the growth of the total child.

Philosophy - Firstschool is developmental in its approach. We believe that children learn best by doing, and that through play, children make discoveries on their own. What the child learns through creating something is more important than the finished product. We foster an atmosphere in which each child is valued by the teacher for his or her own individual qualities. Each one is encouraged to learn as benefits his or her level of readiness.

Program - The Firstschool program can be characterized as very positive, creative, relational, flexible and individualized. It includes a mixture of dramatic play, manipulative games, stories, singing, field trips, cooking experiences and many special activities which allow the child to interact with the world. Within this learning environment, three specific areas are stressed: self-concept, social skills, and language development.

Firstschool hours are 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for all classes. An optional Lunch Bunch program is offered until 1 p.m. on Monday through Friday for 2, 3, and 4 year olds.

Mother's Morning Out - Ages 6-24 months, available Monday through Friday. Two teachers per 8 children.

Two-year-olds: M/W/F class is for older two's and T/TH class is for younger two's. Two teachers per 12 children. (Older two's have birthdays between August 31 and March 1).

Three-year-olds: M/W/F class and T/TH class. Two teachers per 14 children.

Four-year-olds: M/T/W/TH, and M/T/W/T/F classes. Two teachers per 14 children.

FirstSchool Announcements

As summer camp begins Aug. 15, we know that our teachers will begin preparing for FirstSchool to begin it's 33rd year. I'd like to welcome Pat Auman,Gina Klinkhammer, Kellie Silva & Kerri Ohlsen to our 4-year-old teaching team. This promises to be a group that is full of new and fun ideas while upholding our FirstSchool traditions and goals. We will hold a children's open house on Thursday, Sept. 1, for our currently enrolled students and our doors open on Sept. 6 for the 2011-2012 school year. While we are not sure of a completion date, we anxiously await our new classrooms. The children (& their parents!) will be amazed with all of the construction that has taken place since May. Of course, the 2-year-olds insisted we were "building a castle" and what a "castle" it will be. We look forward to the education and nurturing of your children. Thank you for entrusting them to our care. Don't forget to tell your friends about our remaining openings.
